Tombstone Tuesday - Carl Hjalmar Simonsson

In January 2012 I took about 300 photos of tombstones at the old cemetery in Helsingborg and uploaded them to Billiongraves.com.

One of the photos I took, was this one, the tombstone of Carl Hjalmar Simonsson who died only eight years old from tuberculosis.

Tombstone Tuesday - Iru Kodu Rahula

When we were in Estonia on vacation earlier in August this year we visited a couple of cemeteries. One was Pärnamäe. Walking around looking for the tombtone of my relatives I took a picture of this view. If anyone know anything about this specific area, please let me know.

Tombstone Tuesday - Two blind siblings

Last weekend I was at a two day long familyreunion in Tving in Blekinge. Day two we all went to the cemetery in Tving to look at some tombstones related to the family. We went there a bit early so I had time to add the cemetery to Billiongraves.com and upload a couple of photos. It was a very sunny day, not suitable for tombstone photography.

Anyway, I found a really special tombstone, it says: Two blind siblings, Allgot 11 year, Matilda 20 year, 1899.

2 blind siblings, Allgot 11 year, Matilda 20 years, 1899.
I decided to try to see what I could find out. Allgot or Olof Allgot that was his full name was born September 25 1887, in Tving. He died January 26 in 1899. Matilda was born February 24, 1879, in Tving. She died June 17 in 1899. They were both noted as blind in the churchbooks.

Tombstone Tuesday - Elsa Andersson, first female pilot in Sweden

Elsa Andersson Photodate: March 14 2010

Elsa Andersson was the first female pilot in Sweden. She was born 1897 in Strövelstorp parish. Her birthplace is quite close to where I live and grew up and that ofcourse has made her and her life interesting.

She is buried at the Strövelstorp Cemetery.

Elsa was born April 24 in 1897. Her parents were Nils Edvard Andersson and Alma Gustava Svensson.

Below is a picture form the household book covering the years 1898 - 1906. During this time there was also three deaths in the family.

Strövelstorp AIIa:1 (1898-1906) page 271

  • Brother Nils Valdemad (born February 5 1900) dies February 8, 1900
  • Sister Thyra Linnéa (born April 28, 1901) dies  March 26, 1903
  • Mother Alma Gustava dies on December 18, 1903

In the household  book covering 1921 - 1930 in the column for occupation it is noted "flygare" which would translate aviatior.

Strövelstorp Alla:5 page 188

Now Elsa wanted to do more than being a pilot. She wanted to do parachute jumps. She went to Germany and got educated.

On her third jump, February 22 in 1922 she jumped to her death. Between 3000 to 4000 spectators had come to watch. Her parachute didnt expand until she was too close to the ground. She died outside of Askersund. The article below says her head was cruched and both legs broken and that the probably died immediately. The article also said she was 22 years old but as she was born 1897 she was 25 when she died.

Dalpilen February 24 1922

In the death book its written, aeroplane accident, unsuccessful parachute jump.

Tombstone Tuesday - Carl August Nilsson 1837 - 1876 sacrificed his life to save others

This tombestone I found when talking pictures at the old cemetery in Helsingborg to upload on Billiongraves. It says Captain Carl August Nilsson, born September 8 1837, dead April 11 1876, sacrificed his life to save others.

Ofcourse that note on the stone made me wonder what happend. A look in the deathbook of Helsingborg shows that four men died that day by drowning, April 11 in 1876.

It was Carl August Nilsson age 39, Jacob Christian Åström, age 34, Nils Magnus Holmgren, age 23 and Nils Möller, age 43. Next to thier names it says "drunkning af våda" which means drowned by accident.

Here is Carl August Nilsson in the houseexamineroll with his family at the time he died, it is his wife Ingrid Christina Andersson (born May 31 1835, Helsingborg), their son Albert William (born January 20 1864, Helsingborg), daughter Elise Josefina (born April 15 1867) and daughter Olga Emilia (born Septemer 8 (same date as her father) in 1874, Helsingborg).

In the newspapers there was a small article, apparently there was a storm causing a lot of problem with the ships outside Helsingborg and it mentions Nils Möller and Jacob Christian Åström drowning as well as two other sailors not mentioned by name, but I guess that would have to be Carl August Nilsson and Nils Magnus Holmberg,

Tombstone Tuesday - Carl Svensson Palm 1871 - 1896

This stone caught my eye first of all because it was really close to a tree. Then when looking at it, Carl Svensson Palm died quite young, only 24 years old, making me wonder what happen to him.

Carl Svensson Palm, buried in Ängelholm

This is what I found out: Carl was born i Munka Ljungby on August 1st in 1871. His father was Sven Svensson and his mother was Ingar Olsdotter. They had been married for 15 years and Carl was thier sixth child.

When looking at the family, who lives in Skillinge, in the house exam rolls it is sad to see the remark miserably poor next to thier names.

In 1882, Carls father Sven dies. Carl, his mother and his sister Hilda moves to Skillinge Donationshus which is a poorhouse.

In 1892, Carl has joined the cavalry and moves to Össjö. Four years later, in 1896 he dies from tuberculosis in Ängelholm on March 3rd. He is buried in Ängelholm on March 5.

A small note in the newpaper Norra Skåne about the death of Carl Svensson Palm.

Carl Svensson Palm is not related to me but his tombstone caught my eye. Looking at the church records it seems he had a tough life, miserably poor growing up, his father died early and then he died so young from TBC.
